The towns and villages of
the Shinjiko Lake coast were suffered from flood damage in Edo era. In June, 1702, the water surface of the Shinjiko Lake became 2m high, by heavy rain, many people were rescued by ship. And the bank of Hiikawa River was torn by flood damage in August, 80,000 koku were lost. (koku: is a quantity of rice, one koku is about 151 liters) In 1721, hundreds of houses were washed
out by heavy rain and big wind, and 40,000 koku were lost. And in
the next year, similar disaster was happened. At this time, Tahee,
who was born in farmhouse, was 10 years old. Our society of our country, in the
21st century, has rapid aging of population, and deterioration of
environment are worried. That prediction makes us to feel the future
as dark, and people tend to live in the moment. However, the way
of life of Tahee, who faced the given reality, and spend his whole
life to make a plan and direct of river improvement, that gives
us a big encouragement. The reason we publish the history of Tahee Kiyohara in comics, juvenile literature, and novel is to share his ambition with many people, especially young people. |
